Rule 1: Know who your user is.

Hint: Your user is probably not the person who signs the paycheck. He probably doesn't even work with you.

Your user is the person who uses your Web site. She could be a customer, a potential customer, a journalist, a vendor or perhaps a job candidate.

Target your message appropriately.
